Food Stamp Challenge – Day Five

Today was one of those long days for me. Up early, multiple meetings throughout the day, and a bunch of items on the to-do list when I got home. Mid-way through the afternoon I could feel my energy level take a nose dive. I decided to stand up at my desk to work, but all I really wanted to do was sleep under it!

The temptations were many – my husband’s food in the refrigerator, the lunch meeting at Damon’s (oh how I love their pretzels!), and the Chinese place I pass on my way home.  No one would know if I had a sip of wonton soup, would they?

In the grand scheme of things, the “hardships” I’m going through right now are nothing compared to those who live this reality each day.

As I was driving home today I thought long and hard about a comment I received on Facebook about someone’s real life food stamp challenge.

It was an all too familiar story.  A lost job, a cut in food stamps, the hard decision of which bill to pay for the month.  The temptation to give up was ever present, but that was the farthest thought from her mind.  This person was a believer, “God will provide,” she writes.

As I contemplated that comment, I knew that God would provide, but how?  When?  Why the delay?  Life is not fair God.

I prayed.  Hard.

And usually this works.  But not this time.  I was still mad.

And then I remembered a book I read several years ago… Shane Claiborne’s “Becoming the Answer To Our Prayers.”  I revisited it later that night.  Ah yes, “Prayer is not so much about convincing God to do what we want God to do as it is about convincing ourselves to do what God wants us to do.”

Ok I got it.  My call to serve and advocate is not over.  Perhaps after this Challenge it is just the beginning.
