We are excited to introduce to you our theme for 2020 – “CONNECTED.”

We know that anything we do at the Urban Mission is a direct result of others who have felt called to pray and give and serve and care and advocate.

We are all connected as sisters and brothers.

When one falls, we all fall. When one succeeds, we all succeed.

A meaningful term for this is the South African term, “ubuntu,” meaning, “I am, because we are.”

The idea of Ubuntu has existed in the oral cultures of Southern Africa since the 1800s, but it took on a deeper, theological meaning when Desmond Tutu and other South African theologians embraced the term in the context of the South African recovery from the pains and brokenness of apartheid.

To Desmond Tutu, and to us, the values of Ubuntu are quite similar to the values we uphold in the Christian faith – where community and kinship, forgiveness and reconciliation are foundational to how we think and act.  We are, because God first loved us.

As we live out the values of Ubuntu this year – values of connectedness, hospitality, generosity and community, we invite you to join us as well.  Let this be your invitation to CONNECT with the Urban Mission and those we serve in a special way.
