Hutton House Homeless Shelter

In 1988, Urban Mission began a ministry to the homeless. A group of apartments at 203 S. Fourth Street in downtown Steubenville was leased as the home for this ministry.

In 1991, Debra Bryan moved into the Shelter after a fire left her family homeless. Later that year, she became Resident Manager and in 1993, she became Hutton House Director.

In 1991, Hutton House instituted its first programs (a mandatory savings program and budgeting classes) for Shelter guests. Other programs were added in 1992 (parenting, nutrition, conflict resolution, responsibility, child safety, etc.). Sandra Chandler was hired as Education Director in 1996.

In 1996 and 1998, additional rented Shelter apartments were added in facilities located at 142-150 S. Seventh Street. In 2001, the Seventh Street facilities were purchased by Urban Mission.  This is now the home of the official Hutton House Homeless Shelter and Main Offices.  In the fall of 2003, Urban Mission expanded the Homeless Shelter and rented an apartment complex located at 908 Market Street in Steubenville. This provided an additional seven housing units.

Hutton House is now the largest homeless shelter in the Upper Ohio Valley. Focusing exclusively on homeless families, Hutton House is the only shelter which offers fully-furnished one- and two-bedroom apartments.
In 2008, 208 children and adults resided in Hutton House for an average stay of 90 days. 281 "Life skills" classes were presented for Shelter Residents on budgeting, parenting, nutrition, conflict resolution, child safety, etc.

Hutton House is primarily funded by a HUD Emergency Shelter Grant administered by the Ohio Department of Development.
