The Results of God's Love

Quite simply, Urban Mission is an expression of God’s love for “the least of these.” Thanks to you, we have completed another banner year of service to the low income population of the Upper Ohio Valley! In our continuing effort to “tell the story” of where your dollars and volunteer hours go, Urban Mission is pleased to report the following ministry results for year 2008:

Awards

  • Franciscan University "Poverello" Medal for service to the poor through Christian Charity.
  • Urban Mission received national recognition through the “Point of Light Award” for excellence in community service.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank Award for most diverse set of services.

Grocery Distributions

  • 1,556 low income families in Ohio and West Virginia registered to receive help
  • 869,284 pounds of groceries distributed

Soup Kitchen

  • 18,921 hot meals served

Volunteer Service

  • 48,437 hours of volunteer service

Hutton House Homeless Shelter

  • 208 persons resided in the Homeless Shelter: 123 children and 85 adults
  • Length of stay: 90 days
  • 281 “life skills” classes presented for Shelter Residents on budgeting, parenting, nutrition, conflict resolution, child safety, etc.

Joshua Summer Work Camp

  • 16 groups (379 people) from Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New York and all over Ohio completed 94 repair projects (10,601) hours of service) for 34 low-income homeowners, community and Urban Mission.

Christmas Programs

  • 760 children 12 and under received toys and gifts
  • 200+ teens received Christmas stockings
  • 172 Families (464 Children and Teens) received toys through Santa's Recycle Shop

Other Programs

  • Hutton Scholarship Program (four $750 scholarships awarded)
  • Speaker’s Bureau
  • Emergency Assistance: 1,116 individuals helped with groceries, diapers, and other emergency assistance.
  • Sight for Students (free eye exams & glasses for children and teens under 18)
  • CSFP Senior Food Program
  • TANF/Flood Relief Programs
  • Hospitaility Room
  • Look Better, Feel Better free haircuts

Neighborhood Community Development Center

  • 3,977 winter coats given away
  • Back To School Supplies (over 630 students received supplies.)
  • 18th Annual Minority Health Month
  • Lupus Education and Support program
  • Parish Nurse Program
  • Women’s Health Committee
  • Math Excellence Program
  • Greater Steubenville Community Development Corporation 

Summer Programs

  • Annual Street Carnival (a day of free fun, music, food, games, rides and prizes for 900+ kids and adults)

In-Kind Donations (Food Drives, Coats, Shoes, etc)

  • Hunger Ministries donations of items = $133,698
  • Christmas Ministries donations of items = $95,892
  • Hutton House Homeless Shelter donations = $35,879
  • Value of coats, shoes and Back to School Supplies = $8,679
  • Total In-Kind Donations of Goods, Services and Volunteers Hours in 2008 = $729,465.
