Urban
Mission®, located in Steubenville, Ohio,
provides food, shelter and other essential services to the low
income population of the Steubenville, OH - Weirton, WV, metro
area of 134,000 people. Beginning as "Mill Men's Hostel"
in 1959, Urban Mission has grown to become the largest charity
in the Upper Ohio River Valley. Local steel mills which once employed
more than 32,000 workers have seen total employment decline to
under 3,000. Forty percent of area school children now live below
the poverty level.
In
2008, the Urban Mission distributed groceries to 1,556 low-income
families in Ohio and West Virginia. Also, 18,921 hot
meals were served and housed 208 adults and children
in Hutton House Homeless Shelter® and
provided a variety of additional programs which address the physical
and spiritual needs of children, adults and senior citizens who
live at or below the poverty level.
 Previously
recognized
as a "Point
of Light" for encouraging community involvement, Urban
Mission received 48,437 hours of volunteer service in 2008.
Urban
Mission serves all low income people without regard to race, age,
gender, status, or religious affiliation.
